“My passion for tutoring began with a student named Khaled. He was a Syrian refugee who lost his parents and was later sponsored to move to Canada. Shortly after, he moved in with his foster-parents whom he was quite content with. However, when school season arrived, Khaled began experiencing hopelessness because he felt he was behind as a result of his language barrier. He was receiving help at school but it was not enough because his confidence and motivation weren’t there. His foster-mom requested a tutor-mentor to work with Khaled through his fear of school and help him develop strategies to excel. That tutor-mentor was me and as I began working with Khaled, he gradually began showing interest and enthusiasm towards school and learning. Khaled stopped needing me because he was able to develop independent learning skills and organizational and time management skills. I showed Khaled the path to success and he showed me the path to my passion!”
